Kazungula Town Council execute the services and functions as enshrined in the Local Government Act No. 2 of 2019.

GENERAL ADMINISTRATION 

The Council oversees the day-to-day operations of local governance, ensuring smooth administrative processes. This includes: 

  • Office and Facility Management: Maintaining council buildings, public meeting spaces, and administrative offices to facilitate civic engagement and service delivery.
  • Local Security: Collaborating with law enforcement to uphold public order and safety within the district.
  • Insurance and Risk Management: Protecting council assets and liabilities through appropriate insurance coverage.

PUBLIC INFRASTRUCTURE AND SERVICES

Kazungula Town Council is responsible for developing and maintaining essential infrastructure to support economic and social activities: 

  • Roads and Transport: Constructing, repairing, and maintaining roads, bridges, and pedestrian pathways to improve connectivity.
  • Traffic and Parking Regulation: Implementing measures to manage traffic flow, designate parking zones, and enhance road safety.
  • Public Lighting: Installing and maintaining streetlights to ensure safety and accessibility during night time hours.

PUBLIC HEALTH AND SANITATION 

The Council prioritises community health through effective sanitation and public health initiatives: 

  • Cemeteries and Mortuaries: Managing burial sites and mortuary services in a dignified and hygienic manner.
  • Food Safety: Monitoring food vendors, abattoirs, and markets to enforce hygiene standards and prevent foodborne illnesses.
  • Waste Management: Coordinating refuse collection, recycling programmes, and landfill operations to maintain a clean environment.
  • Drainage Systems: Preventing waterlogging and flooding by maintaining functional drainage and sewage systems.

 

URBAN PLANNING AND LAND MANAGEMEN

To ensure organised urban growth, the Council regulates land use and development: 

  • Building Control: Approving construction plans, inspecting developments, and demolishing unsafe structures.
  • Zoning Laws: Designating residential, commercial, and industrial zones to prevent haphazard development.
  • Property Identification: Assigning official addresses and property numbers to improve service delivery and emergency response.

ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT 

Kazungula’s natural resources are protected through sustainable practices: 

  • Conservation Efforts: Safeguarding forests, wetlands, and water bodies from illegal exploitation.
  • Pollution Control: Enforcing regulations to minimise air, water, and soil pollution from industrial and domestic activities.
  • Climate Resilience: Implementing flood prevention measures and promoting green energy initiatives.

ECONOMIC AND COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT 

The Council fosters economic growth and community welfare through: 

  • Business Support: Licensing and regulating local enterprises to stimulate trade and investment.

  • By-law Implementation: Penalising illegal dumping, noise pollution, and unauthorised construction.
  • Licensing: Issuing permits for events, trading, and land use.
  • Legal Action: Prosecuting violations through courts where necessary.

CONSTITUENCY DEVELOPMENT FUND (CDF)

  • Serve as the implementing agencies for CDF projects.
  • Manage the CDF account and ensure compliance with financial and procurement regulations.
  • Provide technical support and supervision to community projects.

COLLABORATION WITH NATIONAL GOVERNMENT 

To aligning local efforts with national goals: 

  • Policy Implementation: Adhering to directives from the Ministry of Local Government.
  • Funding and Technical Support: Accessing grants and expertise for large-scale projects.
  • Reporting: Submitting progress reports to ensure accountability.
